Note: As of September 1, 2026, Preqin has introduced a monthly export limit for exports via web access. This limit can be waived upon written request submitted directly to the provider; see the section titled «Request to Increase the Monthly Export Limit».
Preqin is a specialised database providing private equity data, furthermore detailed data related to venture capital, private debt, hedge funds, real estate, infrastructure and natural resources.
The database covers institutional investors, fundraising, fund performance, deals and assets, fund managers, fund terms and service providers. Preqin comprises data to more than 35,000 companies, more than 65,000 funds and more than 18,000 investors, Especially regarding fund performance, Preqin offers more performance metrics/tools than other database providers, for example median, pooled and money weighted market benchmarks, custom benchmarks, horizon IRRs, public market equivalent (PME) benchmarks, PrEQIn quarterly index and transparent fund-level cash flow data. The number of transactions in alternative investments is particularly impressive. Preqin includes information to more than 450,000 deals and exits.
Data is generally available from 1969 onwards. However, it is occassionaly possible to research data back to 1905.
Some Preqin datasets are also available on the WRDS platform, without monthly export limitation.
The first time you access the site, you can create an account using your @unisg.ch / @student.unisg.ch email address on the Preqin Registration and Access Page.
Access to the Preqin Pro platform also works via the Preqin Registration and Access Page. Select “Launch” in the upper-right corner of the page and click the link for Preqin Pro.
You will be asked for your institutional email address and will be forwarded to a login page where you can sign in with your HSG account credentials.
Since September 2026, Preqin has implemented a monthly download limit of 25,000 data rows. Each time you export data, you can see how many data rows are still available for the remainder of the current month. If you need an export limit higher than 25,000 data rows per month for a project, you can submit a request directly to Preqin. At the bottom of the Academic Institution Download Policy page, you will find the required «Data Export Request Form». Send this form directly to preqin.clientservices@blackrock.com. Please note that processing may take up to 10 business days.
