Professor Buiten

Welcome to the Homepage of Miriam Buiten

Professor for Law and Economics

Miriam Buiten is Professor of Law and Economics at the University of St.Gallen, Vice Director of the Institute for Law and Economics (ILE-HSG) and a co-founder of the Center for Law & Tech.

Her research is on the interaction between technology and law: how digital technologies unsettle established legal categories, and how law in turn shapes how technologies develop. She works in particular on the regulation of and liability for artificial intelligence, and on the governance of online platforms. Her approach combines legal and economic analysis, and looks at European and international frameworks.

As a Research Fellow at the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), the Brussels think tank, she contributes to European digital policy debates and writes reports and recommendations for regulators, the European Commission and industry. She is a Board Member of the German Law and Economics Association.

Miriam came to St.Gallen in 2020 from the University of Mannheim, where she was Junior Professor of Law and Economics and completed her habilitation in 2024. She holds a doctorate from Erasmus University Rotterdam and received the University of St.Gallen Latsis Prize in 2024.
