Welcome to the Chair Gschwend!

Lukas Gschwend is full professor of History of Law, Sociology of Law and Criminal Law at the University of St. Gallen.

He is also a member of the research institute of Legal Sciences (FR-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen, where he is a member of the directorate of the Centre for the History of Public Law as well as the Centre for Criminal Law and Criminology.

Prof. Dr. Lukas Gschwend is full professor of History of Law, Sociology of Law and Criminal Law at the University of St. Gallen and titular professor of History of Law and Philosophy of Law at the University of Zurich.

Since 2006, he has presided over the Legal Sources Foundation of the Swiss Lawyers' Association, which has been publishing the edition of the Collection of Swiss Legal Sources since 1898 (https://www.ssrq-sds-fds.ch/home/). Lukas Gschwend's teaching responsibilities encompass classes in legal history, sociology of law and criminal law.

Research

Lukas Gschwend is active as an interdisciplinary, regional and international researcher.

Lukas Gschwend focuses his research activities on the History of Criminal Law and Crime as well as on the History of Legal Ideas and Legal Science. Further fields of research are the History of Business Law and the History of Minority Rights.

Lukas Gschwend is the president of the Law Sources Foundation of the “Swiss Lawyers Society” as well as board member of the “Association for Studies of Economic History”, of the “Historical Society of the Canton of St. Gallen” and the “Lawyer’s Association of the Canton of St. Gallen”.

Furthermore, Lukas Gschwend supports the "European Journal of Legal History".

Research Projects

Since 2006: Editorial Director of the “Collection of Swiss Law Sources” in the capacity of President of the board of trustees of the Law Sources Foundation of the Swiss Lawyers Society.

2014­-2019: Member of the Expert Commission on Administrative Detention (IEC), established by the Swiss Federal Council to research the practice of administrative detention, legal in Switzerland until 1981.
