Caspar Hirschi is engaged in research on the relationship between science and politics in past and present times, with a special focus on the roles of scientific experts in policy advice and in the media. He has presented case studies on controversies about scientific expertise in the 18th and 19th centuries as well as on the tension between scientific advice and public engagement in crises of the recent past and present. He is currently working theoretically and empirically on the democratic legitimacy of expertise.
