The thesis examines episodes in which people resisted abuses and shortcomings related to information technology. These include the boycott of the German census in the 1980s, which was for the first time processed with computers, digital self-defence against surveillance and open-source projects that offer alternatives to commercial internet services. The strategies and tactics used in these cases deal with central epistemological questions in a digitalised democratic society.
