Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot
The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is one of the world’s most prestigious competitions in the field of international arbitration. Each year, students from over 80 countries participate. The competition combines academic theory with substantive and procedural aspects of international commercial law and particularly enhances written and oral advocacy skills, legal research abilities, problem-solving skills, and teamwork in an international environment. The applicable arbitration rules change annually and are based on those of the respective co-sponsoring institutions. A particular milestone was achieved by the HSG Vis Moot Team 2024/2025, which won the competition for the first time in the university’s history.

In our Master of Laws and Economics (MLE) programme, you will benefit from a comprehensive and high-quality education, enriched by the involvement of renowned and internationally recognized experts. The programme combines the expertise of both Swiss and foreign professors, as well as experienced practitioners from various relevant fields.

The Master of Laws and Economics (MLE) programme at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) culminates in the degree "Master of Arts HSG (M.A. HSG) in Law and Economics." With a strong emphasis on legal education alongside economic expertise, this programme provides a comprehensive legal education, making it possible for graduates to pursue a legal traineeship and subsequently take the bar exam.
The MLE programme addresses the growing demand in both the public and private sectors for specialists capable of approaching complex issues holistically and interdisciplinarily, particularly in areas related to regulation and business operations.
Students in the MLE programme gain a unique understanding of the intricate relationship between law and economics. This equips them to develop professional solutions to economic and legal challenges from both legal and economic perspectives.
The MLE programme comprises 90 ECTS credits and is typically completed in three semesters. The programme primarily focuses on legal studies, which comprises about two-thirds of the curriculum, with the remaining one-third dedicated to economics. Students may also choose an optional specialization in Law and Technology or Tax Law.
Some MLE courses are conducted jointly with other master's programmes (particularly the Master in Law) or are drawn from specific economics programmes. The Integrative Seminar, specifically developed for the MLE, brings together two key areas: legal studies and economics. These two focus areas are carefully designed to prepare students for the Integrative Seminar, which concludes the Law & Economics education at HSG.
Additionally, the MLE programme complements other teaching programmes at the University of St.Gallen, such as "Business Education" and "Business Journalism" as well as the CEMS Master’s in International Management.
The MLE Master’s programme is designed for students who are interested in a modern, challenging legal education with additional offerings in economics. These students seek to systematically acquire legal and economic knowledge, as well as an interdisciplinary understanding of the different methodological approaches of these closely related disciplines. Our students are characterized by self-discipline, a strong commitment to performance, and a passion for independent work and initiative. They are individuals who wish to shape their studies with an entrepreneurial spirit and a sense of responsibility.
The MLE programme provides a comprehensive legal education with a distinct focus on economics. We train experts who can build a bridge between national law and international business.
After completing the necessary internships and passing the subsequent exams, the MLE opens the path to a legal career in Switzerland.
If you hold a degree in a different field or from a foreign university, please refer to the regulations for pursuing a second Bachelor’s degree in Law and Economics.
