Programme Summary

Why MLE

The Master of Laws and Economics (MLE) programme at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) culminates in the degree "Master of Arts HSG (M.A. HSG) in Law and Economics." With a strong emphasis on legal education alongside economic expertise, this programme provides a comprehensive legal education, making it possible for graduates to pursue a legal traineeship and subsequently take the bar exam.

The MLE programme addresses the growing demand in both the public and private sectors for specialists capable of approaching complex issues holistically and interdisciplinarily, particularly in areas related to regulation and business operations.

Students in the MLE programme gain a unique understanding of the intricate relationship between law and economics. This equips them to develop professional solutions to economic and legal challenges from both legal and economic perspectives.

Curriculum

The MLE programme comprises 90 credits and is typically completed in three semesters. The primary focus of the programme is on legal studies, which make up approximately two-thirds of the curriculum, while the economic component constitutes around one-third.

Some MLE courses are conducted jointly with other Master's programmes (particularly the legal Master's programme) or are drawn from specific economics programmes. The integration seminar, specifically developed for the MLE, brings together the two key areas of legal studies and economics. These two focus areas are carefully designed to prepare students for the integration seminar, which concludes the Law & Economics education at HSG.

Additionally, the MLE programme complements other teaching programs at the University of St.Gallen, such as "Business Education" and "Business Journalism", as well as the CEMS Master’s in International Management.
