What are the effects of automation and digitalisation on the labour market? How do trade gains influence global GDP? How does our society manage its scarce resources? With the MEcon, you receive a comprehensive economics education based on the core areas of micro- and macroeconomics as well as econometrics.
Economic interrelations shape our politics and society, as well as significant aspects of our daily lives. Through our Master’s programme in Economics (MEcon), you will:
We place great emphasis on your personal development, preparing you optimally for ambitious future careers. Small class sizes in the courses not only empower an active exchange among students but also promote direct contact with our lecturers.
The MEcon equips students with the necessary tools for economic fields and research in the digital age.
Level 1: Laying the Foundation
To ensure a solid understanding of the core disciplines of economics, our students attend seven courses in advanced micro- and macroeconomics, mathematics, and econometrics.
Level 2: Expanding Perspectives
Building on this foundation, students can apply and deepen their skills by taking courses from the MEcon programme or from other Master’s programmes at HSG. The profile can be further refined with an optional specialisation. Additionally, in the contextual studies, students explore subjects beyond the Core Studies. You can even enhance your studies witn an additional certificate in FinTech, Real Estate or Managing Climate Solutions.
Level 3: Producing Results
The final level focuses on the practical application of acquired knowledge, culminating in the development of the Master’s thesis on an economic topic.

The MEcon degree is an investment into the future of our students that enables them to repay their study costs after the first few
months of employment. Thanks to extensive government subsidies for higher education, tuition fees are low in Switzerland compared to other countries. However, financing of one’s studies is an important consideration. Besides different prizes for outstanding students, the HSG offers a number of options to support their students.
Once a year we award MEcon prizes for outstanding student achievements at the Graduation Day in the Autumn semester. These prizes provide an incentive for consistently good results in the programme. All students studying in the MEcon programme are automatically considered.
Further information on the prizes for outstanding achievements can be found on this website.
Thanks to the STARR International Foundation, the MEcon programme can grant CHF 10,000 each two highly talented foreign-language students with a recognised foreign Bachelor’s degree every year. All students who have been admitted to the MEcon will be automatically considered for the STARR fellowships.
Further information on the STARR Excellence Scholarship can be found on the Student Funding - HSG Fund and Excellence Scholarships page.
A degree is an investment in your personal development and in the future. The financial aspect therefore should not be the only factor when deciding to begin or continue studies.
There are many ways of financing studies: employment, cantonal scholarships, private loans or simply family support. The Advice Center for Study Funding provides information about all these financing options.
