Grüezi Amerika Episode 12 – Law & Order

Extreme sentences, the role of the prosecutor and the death penalty - Prof. Nora Markwalder explains what makes American criminal law so different from our own.
Grüezi Amerika Episode 12 – Law & Order

From American crime and legal dramas to true-crime podcasts and documentaries, many of us immerse ourselves in the American (criminal) world from time to time. Although we are familiar with it through film and audio, much of it remains foreign to us: the role of prosecutors, the sometimes absurd sentences or the retention of the death penalty. In an interview with Prof. Nora Markwalder, we get to the bottom of what seems so strange to us.

Prof. Nora Markwalder is Professor of Criminal Law at the University of St. Gallen. She studied in Lausanne and obtained her doctorate in Zurich. She also spent two extended periods of study and research at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

This episode was recorded live at OPEN SQUARE at the University of St.Gallen on 22 March 2025.
