Assistant Professor of Criminal Law, Law of Criminal Procedure and Criminology

Monika Simmler conducts research in the fields of criminal law, criminal procedure law and criminology. Her research focuses in particular on the consequences of the use of (advanced) technology for the law as well as the criminal legal and criminological implications of the digital age in general. In her habilitation, for example, she is examining criminal liability in cases that involve human-machine interaction. In other projects, she is addressing the use of algorithms in policing and criminal justice or the phenomenon of cybercrime. Another of her specialities is the theory of criminal responsibility, i.e. the doctrines of agency and culpability, as well as the sociological foundations of criminal law. In her work, she uses various methods, including empirical ones.

Monika Simmler is Co-Director of the Competence Center for Criminal Law and Criminology at the University of St.Gallen (SK-HSG). Prior to joining the University of St.Gallen, she studied and obtained her doctorate at the University of Zurich, was a visiting researcher at the Universities of Oxford, Columbia New York and Vienna, and worked at the Public Prosecutor's Office in St.Gallen.
