Assistant Professor for Law and Economics

Miriam Buiten is Assistant Professor of Law and Economics at the University of St.Gallen. Her research focuses on the legal issues surrounding new technologies and artificial intelligence and the role of competition law in regulating the digital economy. She teaches European Economic Law, Law & Economics and Information Technology Law. 

Miriam Buiten leads a research project on Platform Governance, funded by the University of St.Gallen Basic Research Fund. She is also a Research Fellow at the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE). 

Previously, Miriam Buiten was a Junior Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Mannheim. She has been involved in several policy studies for the European Commission and the Dutch government on topics such as the role of online intermediaries in the ecommerce sector and mechanisms to reduce regulatory burdens.

29 November 2022

Miriam Buiten was invited to speak at the 10th Annual Transatlantic Digital Economy Conference of the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union (AmCham EU) about EU digital policy, digital sovereignty and the transatlantic relationship today.

October 2022

In October, the European Commission published its proposals for EU liability rules for AI and for product liability:

It incorporates many of the suggestions she made in her report EU liability rules for the age of Artificial Intelligence with Martin Peitz and Alexandre de Streel last year.
