Law Double Degree SMU

The Law School at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) offers Master's law students the opportunity to earn two degrees through a Double Degree Programme (DDP) with SMU, starting in Autumn semester 2027.

Curriculum

Students apply for the DDP at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) and complete two semesters at HSG and two semesters at SMU. As a result of the cooperation between the two schools and the mutual recognition of course work, it is possible for participants to complete a MIL, MLaw or MLE at the HSG and a LLM at SMU in just two years. 

MIL, MLaw and MLE students can apply for the double degree programme with SMU Admission criteria include:

  • Academic performance
  • Motivation and extracurricular involvement
  • Proficiency in English

MIL (69 ECTS - within 2 semesters (DDP SMU) / within 3 semesters (DDP Fletcher))

  • Compulsory subjects  (18 ECTS)​
  • Cluster courses, legal electives & electives (24 ECTS)
  • Contextual studies (9 ECTS)​
  • Master's thesis (18 ECTS; credited at Bocconi)​

MLaw (69 ECTS - within 2 semesters (DDP SMU) / within 3 semesters (DDP Fletcher))

  • Compulsory subjects (26 ECTS)​
  • Core electives & electives (16 ECTS)​
  • Contextual studies (9 ECTS)​
  • Master's thesis (18 ECTS; credited at Bocconi)​

MLE (69 ECTS - within 2 semesters (DDP SMU) / within 3 semesters (DDP Fletcher))

  • Compulsory subjects (18 ECTS)​
  • Core electives (27 ECTS)​
  • Contextual studies (9 ECTS)​
  • Master's thesis (18 ECTS; credited at Bocconi)​

 

Selection based on academic performance, motivation, and extracurricular involvement.

Applications must be submitted via the Mobility-Online Portal - the corresponding link will be displayed in StudentWeb during the application period.

 

Application requirements
  • Motivation letter (written independently, no AI, designated template only)

  • Current Curriculum vitae (designated template only)

  • Proof of valid and accepted English language certificate - no older than 2 years by the time of the application deadline.

  • Minimum grade average: 5.0 (Transcript of the final grades of the B.A. with Diploma Supplement and minimum GPA of 5.0, incl. Grading Scale)

26th September 2025 to 17th November 2025 - 4 PM CET

All documents need to be submitted latest by November 17, 2025 - 4 PM CET. 

Late or incomplete applications are not considered.

Tuition fees & other costs

Tuition fees are paid at the HSG during the Bocconi semesters abroad. HSG students are exempt from the basic tuition fees at Bocconi University, but bear all other costs associated with their semesters abroad in Italy. Costs incurred include expenses for travel, accommodation, meals and insurance, which may vary. For more information, please contact Student Mobility Services.

 

Financial support

✅ SEMP (Swiss European Mobility Programme): Students from Swiss universities can receive a SEMP scholarship for their semesters abroad in Europe.
✅ Support programmes & scholarships: Some partner universities offer additional financial support or scholarships for DDP participants.
