Peter Gomez was born on 23 August 1947 in St.Gallen.
He attended the cantonal grammar schools in Sarnen and Lucerne and obtained his Matura in 1966. Gomez then began studying economics at HSG. From 1971, he was a personal assistant to Professor Hans Ulrich and held a position of a teaching assistant. In 1975 Gomez published his dissertation entitled Systemmethodik - Grundlagen einer Methodik zur Erforschung und Gestaltung komplexer soziotechnischer Systeme (Systems methodology – basics of a methodology for research and design of complex socio-technical systems).
One year later he published his habilitation entitled Die kybernetische Gestaltung des Operations Managements (Cybernetic operations management). In 1977, Gomez held an Assistant Professor position at the State University of New York. After his return, he taught business administration at HSG as a privatdozent (lecturer).
Between 1978 and 1981, Peter Gomez was management secretary at Ringier AG. In 1982 he rose to the top management level and became Director of Planning and Organisation and of Central Services. Between 1983 and 1989 he was director of Distral AG, which belonged to Stephan Schmidheiny's Anova Group. In 1989, he and his partner founded Valcor AG, a management consulting firm for strategic management and transactions.
In 1986, Gomez was appointed Titular Professor of Business Administration at the University of St.Gallen (HSG). He held visiting professorships at the University of Basel (1986) and the University of Zurich (1988). In 1990, he was promoted to Full Professor and served as Direc-tor of the Institute of Management & Strategy.
Peter Gomez was President of the University of St.Gallen (HSG) between 1999 and 2005. His presidency was marked by many changes. HSG took on a pioneering role in the implementation of the Bologna Process in Switzerland with its new teaching concept of 2001/02. Since then, Matura students have been starting their studies at HSG with the Assessment Year.
Between 2005 and 2010, Gomez was the founding Dean of the Executive School of Management, Technology and Law (ES-HSG), which offers an entire range of HSG’s executive education offerings.
Peter Gomez is President of the Friends of the FDP association and Chairman of the Global Business School Network, an organisation of 75 business schools from around the world that supports African universities. Since 2014, he and the team of the Center for Leadership and Values in Society at the University of St.Gallen (CLVS-HSG) have published the Gemein-wohlAtlas, a scientific study of the Swiss organisations’ contribution to the public good.
Between 2006 and 2013, Gomez was Chairman of the Board of Directors of SIX Group and the SIX Swiss Exchange. He also serves on boards of various Swiss companies.
Peter Gomez is an avid butterfly collector and golfer. He is married and a father of two daughters.
Gomez was appointed Emeritus Professor in 2012.
