Florence Lentner
Technical Advisor to the Board at cohaga AG
Master's in Computer Science

«Think like a computer scientist. Act like an entrepreneur.»

Florence is a team player who, thanks to her cooperative and supportive nature, does not have to take centre stage to make an impression, even in a larger group. During her studies at the University of St.Gallen, she had the opportunity to develop her leadership skills. Among other things, she served as president and co-founder of the association for computer science students, which contributed significantly to strengthening the community of 'techies' and the representation of their interests at the leading business university in the German-speaking world. These experiences alongside her computer science studies – coupled with the entrepreneurial skills she developed – opened up the opportunity for her to start as Chief Technology Officer in a rapidly growing scale-up even before she graduated from the University. In this interview, she provides further insights into her findings.

What does the University of St.Gallen (HSG) stand for?
Excellence and professionalism, motivation and drive, as well as practical relevance and entrepreneurship.

What makes the Master in Computer Science at HSG special?
For me, it is above all the family-like study atmosphere. The proximity to research through direct contact with professors also characterises the Master's in Computer Science; and, of course, the practical relevance of the teaching at a high academic level.

Why would you recommend the programme?
The Master's in Computer Science at HSG brings together people from different backgrounds and offers great opportunities for development both in terms of the profession, through the specialisations and the proximity to research, and in terms of personal development, through the leadership entrepreneurship courses. I can also recommend the Master's in Computer Science because of the great fellow students.

What personal successes have you experienced through your studies?
Studying gave me the opportunity to massively expand my network. For example, the knowledge of data science that I acquired during my studies also attracted the attention of my current employer, cohaga AG. They offered me a position as CTO, or Chief Technology Officer. That was, of course, a great start to a career as a leader.

What insights have you gained for your life?
Firstly, that it is worth focusing on the essentials and driving them forward with vigour. Secondly, with regard to my role as a leader, it cannot be emphasised enough how important communication is – it is the be-all and end-all of leadership. Thirdly, shared experiences enrich your life. Everything is more enjoyable when you share it, both the hard work and the ultimate success.

How has the programme changed you?
Before university, I had limited experience with leadership. Through my role as CTO and various other mandates, such as my presidency of the ACM Chapter Uni St.Gallen, I have learned to feel comfortable in a leadership role and to develop my personal leadership style.

How do you see your future and your next professional steps?
In connection with my master's thesis, I would like to explore the topic of AI alignment in more detail. This involves questions about how AI systems can behave in accordance with human intentions and values. It is an interesting topic with a positive impact on the economy and society.

I see my future in the start-up and research-related environment. I really value innovative and dynamic environments where I can keep growing.

Furthermore, I strive to grow as a leader and to take on new challenges in this area as well.
