The Skills and Languages Area brings together courses within the Contextual Studies programme that are designed to develop practical, directly applicable competencies. Unlike the Areas of Concentration, these offerings are not grouped thematically, but are aligned with the demands of academic study and professional life. At the Bachelor's level, the category includes both Languages and Skills; at the Master's level, it focuses exclusively on Skills.
The University of St.Gallen promotes multilingualism as a key foundation for academic mobility and professional readiness in an international environment. Students are therefore required to demonstrate proficiency in at least two foreign languages as part of their degree programme.
Within the Skills and Languages category, the Contextual Studies programme offers courses as well as examinations in ten foreign languages that may be credited as language qualifications. In addition, Skills courses help students develop practical competencies that support both their academic progress and their professional development.
At the Bachelor's level, students may earn up to 12 ECTS credits in Skills and Languages.
At the Master's level, the focus is on application-oriented Skills courses. These courses develop practical competencies that are essential for both academic success and professional practice. The range of offerings includes Digital Literacy - such as the acquisition of programming skills - as well as courses in rhetoric, writing, negotiation, time management, research methods, and other practice-oriented competencies.
Foreign languages form part of the Bachelor's curriculum, including the Assessment Year. At the Master's level, language qualifications are required only where they are part of the admission requirements. In Skills and Languages at the Bachelor's level, and in Skills at the Master's level, students generally enjoy a free choice of courses.
At the Master's level, students may earn up to 6 ECTS credits in Skills.
