How will universities teach in the future? What impact do new technologies have? Where is the research heading? Who finances it all? During uncertain times in particular, various questions arise about the future of universities. Prof. Dr. Oliver Gassmann, Prof. Dr. Naomi Haefner and David M. Wagner from ITEM-HSG have been tackling these questions in depth over the last few months on behalf of the President of HSG, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Ehrenzeller. They conducted numerous interviews and roundtable discussions, exchanged views with various stakeholders as part of the St.Gallen Symposium and the trial-run of the St.Gallen Collegium. Moreover, they published an article on this subject in the science magazine.
They have summarised their findings so far in an interim report and made an abridged version of it available to the participants of the International Symposium "Universities in an Age of Uncertainty" as a basis for discussion. During the event on 15. September, the propositions on the future of universities will be discussed in plenary and dealt with in greater depth in smaller groups at ten workshops on specific topics, which will run in parallel. We are looking forward to hearing from numerous experts and students from Germany and abroad, who will augment the discussions with their own perspectives. Participating experts include representatives from universities and business schools as well as from technical universities, universities of applied sciences, institutes, NGOs and other organisations.
The thoughts and insights from the symposium will be included in the work of Oliver Gassmann, Naomi Haefner and David M. Wagner. We can look forward to the final publication of the project, which is due to be published in the spring of 2024. Oliver Gassmann and Naomi Haefner give a foretaste of the upcoming International Symposium in two video interviews.
