15 September 2010. The symposium, which takes place both on campus and at the Kunsthalle St. Gallen, is supported by the German Haniel Stiftung and the internationally acclaimed journal Organization. Over the three days, participants will discuss the economic, political, and organizational implications of aesthetic theory and artistic practice. As well as contributing to the development of academic knowledge, these questions have direct relevance for organization, management and working practices in the arts and creative industries.
Growing influence of the creative industry
With some estimates suggesting that the creative industries account for more than 30 percent of the workforce in advanced economies like Western Europe and the United states, the potential benefits from an interdisciplinary understanding of the issues addressed in the symposium are significant.
Performance at the Kunsthalle St. Gallen
During the Symposium artists and researchers show their results and arts both on the Campus of the HSG and in the Kunst Halle St. Gallen. San Keller, an artist from the city of Berne, invites to a surprising performance at the Kunst Halle. The performance of is a prelude to the symposium «The Politics and Aesthetics of Organization» of the University of St. Gallen (15/16/17 September 2010 at 6 p.m.).
Art and Urban Space
The symposium contributes to the University of St Gallen’s growing international reputation in the area of organizational aesthetics and cultural practice, as is reflected by the publication last year of the book Parcitypate: Art and Urban Space (edited by Timon Beyes, Sophie-Thérèse Krempl and Amelie Deuflhard). Grown out of a symposium that took place at Hamburg's Kampnagel Theatre, the book brings together artists, art theorists and urban and organizational researchers in order to discuss the effects of artistic interventions on the production of urban space. Also, last year Professor Chris Steyaert, Director of the University’s Research Institute for Organizational Psychology, co-published a book on The Politics and Aesthetics of Entrepreneurship.
