Appointment: Miriam Buiten

Prof. Dr. Miriam Buiten has been Full Professor of Law and Economics at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) since 1 February 2025.

Prof. Dr. Miriam Buiten completed degrees in law and economics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam from 2007 to 2011, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Economics (B.Sc.) and a Bachelor of Laws in Dutch Law (LL.B.). She then went on to obtain a European Master’s in Law & Economics (M.Sc., cum laude) as part of a joint programme between the universities of Hamburg and Bologna. From 2013 to 2015, Prof. Buiten completed a further Master’s in International and European Public Law (LL.M., cum laude) at the Faculty of Law of Erasmus University Rotterdam. In June 2017, she completed her doctorate at Erasmus University Rotterdam with her dissertation “Harmonisation and the EU Internal Market: A Law and Economics Approach.” During her studies and doctoral research, she worked in various law firms and at the European Commission.

From June 2017 to January 2020, Prof. Buiten was a Junior Professor of Law and Economics in the Department of Law at the University of Mannheim. Since February 2020, she has been an Assistant Professor of Law and Economics with tenure track at the University of St.Gallen. In November 2024, she habilitated at the University of Mannheim.

Research focus: platform economy

Prof. Dr. Miriam Buiten conducts research in the areas of technology law, liability law and antitrust law. One focus of her research is on the regulatory challenges posed by new technologies and digital platforms. Her interdisciplinary approach combines insights from law, economics and other disciplines to develop a better understanding of new technologies and platform markets and to promote effective regulation.

As a Research Fellow at the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), she is actively involved in exchanges with policymakers and is a sought-after expert for European authorities. Her research has been published in renowned journals such as the European Journal of Risk Regulation, the Computer Law & Security Review and the European Journal of Law and Economics. In addition, her insights have also received widespread attention in various media outlets through interviews and podcasts.

In 2024, she was awarded the prestigious Latsis Prize for her pioneering research on platform regulation. Prof. Buiten is the vice director of the Institute for Law and Economics (ILE-HSG), co-founder of the HSG Law & Tech Lab, and a board member of the German Law and Economics Association.
