Appointment: Marvin Hanisch

Prof. Dr. Marvin Hanisch has been a Full Professor of Management at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) since 1 September 2026.

After studying business administration, economics and cultural studies, Marvin Hanisch completed his PhD at the University of Passau on research and development alliances in the biopharmaceutical industry. During his studies, he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes), the Max Weber Programme and the Joachim Herz Foundation. Research stays took him to the University of Colorado Boulder (USA), Purdue University (USA) and HKU Business School (Hong Kong). His research has received numerous awards, including from the Strategic Management Society (SMS) and the Academy of Management (AOM), as well as the Jürgen Hauschildt Prize of the German Academic Association for Business Research (VHB). In 2019, he was appointed to the University of Groningen, initially as Assistant Professor and, from 2023, as Associate Professor.

Research at the Intersection of Management and Technology

Marvin Hanisch’s research is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of strategic management, innovation management and information management. At its core is the question of how organizations are led and governed in an age of disruptive technologies. He examines this question across a range of high-tech contexts, including R&D alliances, blockchain platforms, AI-based companies and open-source software communities. He publishes regularly in leading FT50 journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Management and Journal of Management Studies, and is ranked among the top 20 early-career researchers in economics and business in the Netherlands (Economenparade 2025). He also works closely with companies across various industries to ensure the practical relevance of his findings.

Extensive teaching experience at all levels

Marvin Hanisch teaches at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level, offering lectures and seminars such as Strategic Management, Digital Transformation Strategy, Crisis Management and Data Analytics. He draws on international teaching experience gained at various institutions: he teaches or has taught at the University of Groningen (Netherlands), in Germany at the University of Passau and Freie Universität Berlin, and at Maynooth University (Ireland).
