Appointment: Aurelia Tamò-Larrieux

For Prof. Tamò-Larrieux, the appointment marks a return to her alma mater: she studied Law and Economics at HSG before completing her doctoral research on data protection by design and default at the University of Zurich with extended research stays at the Institute for Pervasive Computing at ETH Zurich and at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society.

Research on law, technology, and trustworthy digital systems

Her research lies at the intersection of law and digital technologies, with a focus on privacy, data protection, legal design, transparency of automated decision-making and artificial intelligence, automatically processable regulation, and trust in automation. Before joining HSG, she was an Associate Professor at the University of Lausanne and a lecturer at EPFL, where she established the Legal Design & Code Lab, which will relocate to St.Gallen. She maintains a close collaboration and part-time engagement with Lausanne. She previously held positions at the Law & Tech Lab at Maastricht University and was the recipient of the International Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of St. Gallen.

At HSG, Prof. Tamò-Larrieux will further develop an interdisciplinary research agenda on law, technology, and public interest innovation. Her current projects include the BRIDGE Discovery project on accessible, reliable, and collaborative AI for law; the SNSF-funded CoCoDa project on the development of techno-legal tools to study and mitigate systemic risks posed by dominant online platforms; and the SNSF-funded DECODE project on evidence-informed and human-centered data governance policies based on privacy-enhancing design and code. 

The chair is also part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network REGULAIRE ("Regulatory Learning for the Governance of Transformative Technologies"), focusing on how institutions learn to govern AI and other emerging technologies when rapid change outpaces traditional regulatory routines.

Teaching, community building, and academic engagement

Prof. Tamò-Larrieux’s teaching bridges legal analysis and technological developments, addressing both law students and students from technical disciplines. She has taught courses and given guest lectures at several universities. She is also an active member of the international law and technology research community and co-leads Europe-wide initiatives such as the Computer Science & Law Europe Network. Through the Chair for Law & Technology and the Legal Design & Code Lab, she will continue to connect legal scholarship with computer science, design, and the social sciences.
