Projects

This year, apart from the day to day business, the team of the library will also be working on the following larger projects:

  • Services support:
    • Inventory: systematic checkup of the library's physical media to determine the actual stock and identify missing books
    • Tool for the reservation of study spaces: Implementation of a tool for the students to reserve study spaces. This will allow for a more efficient use of the library as a study space, and it will also reduce the waiting queues during peak times.
    • Print journals: Streamlining of our collection of print journals (adjustments in the library software Alma and in the physical collection)
  • Organizational matters:
    • Document management with Files365: transfer of the library's operationally relevant documents to the university's new file repository; restructuring and reducing of old file repositories
    • Library statistics: determine relevant variables and their definitions and clean up data archives

During 2024, apart from our day to day business, we have also been working on the following larger projects:

  • Service and supply:
    • Survey on the use and satisfaction of the library
    • Adaptation of the lending regulations, the user regulation and the fee rates
    • Reorganization of the information area (light circulation desk, search and find desk)
    • Rearrangement of the history collection on the upper level of the library
    • Open access: coordination of communication with the vice-president`s board for research
    • Print collection clearance (multiple copies, older editions)
       
  • Events:
    • Organization of the 2nd DACHS conference of the associations Bibliosuisse, Bibliotheksverband Südtirol, Verein Deutscher Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare and Vereinigung Österreichischer Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare, 14 - 15 February 2024
    • Planning and execution of several events as part of the Biblioweekend, 22 - 24 March 2024
    • Poetry slam by Lara Stoll on "Mental health and reading" followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Jürg Engler, Ostschweizer Forum für psychische Gesundheit, 25 April 2024
    • Planning and execution of the anniversary conference of the Vereinigung der juristischen Bibliotheken Schweiz VJBS, 15 - 17 May 2024

       
  • Strategy:
    • Completion of the strategy process and reorganization of the library teams

During 2023, apart from our day to day business, we have also been working on the following larger projects:

  • Alma und Primo:
    • Consolidation Rapido (SLSP tool for courier services and inter library loans): internal workflows and instructions
       
  • Service and supply:
    • Adjustment of opening hours of our Search and Find Service
    • Reorganisation of the collection on the first floor (law, history)
    • Introduction of ALMA Digital Inventory
       
  • Technology:
    • Switch to Teams telephone
    • Change RFID infrastructure provider
       
  • Strategy:
    • Continuation of the process of optimisation and re-evaluation of the Strategy/Goals 2025
       
  • Communication:
    • New video for the StartWeek

During 2022, apart from our day to day business, we have also been working on the following larger projects:


  • Alma und Primo:   
    • Introduction Rapido: Adjustments for courier services and inter library loans    
    • Local courier in St. Gallen
    • Third Iron Libkey: direct link to PDF in HSGswisscovery
    • Database index: future presentation in Primo and on our website
       
  • Opening and connection to SQUARE:  
    • Adjustment of opening hours, study space availability
    • Effects on Avenue, nooks, offices and media return etc.
       
  • Website:     
    • New CMS (Updating / Optimisation)
       
  • Open Access:    
    • Negotiations, implementation of new Read&Publish-Agreements
    • Coordination with the Vice-President's Board (Research)
    • Evaluating the option of Gold Open Access
        
  • Optimisation and re-evaluation Strategy/Goals 2025:    
    • New tasks and foci

During 2021, apart from our day to day business, we have also been working on the following larger projects:

  • Renovation of the library building in spring 2021: provisional circulation desk in the basement of the lower building and relocation of the offices into the containers. Summer 2021: Replacement of old library shelves (around 700 units containing 7.5 km of media) and of the carpet. For autumn term: set up of a newly designed entrance area of the library and moving all offices back into the library building.
  • Alma: production of manuals and adjustment of workflows.
  • HSGswisscovery: continual optimisation of media display and usability.
  • Adjustment of service hours in the library (= library team presence) without reduction of opening hours.
  • Master and PhD study places: new arrangement and conception

During 2020, apart from our day to day business, we have also been working on the following larger projects:

  • SLSP
    • Second and third test migration
    • Preparation for Go Live
    • Training of staff
  • Covid-19
    • Adjustments to library operations during lockdown and for reopening
    • Virtual reading room
  • Renovation of the library building
    • Relocation of the offices into the containers
    • Installation of the temporary circulation desk in the containers during summer 2020
    • Planning of further renovation phase in 2021
    • Public tender for new library shelves
  • Learning Center HSG
    • Collaboration in planning the connection to the Learning Center
    • Redesign of the southern part of the library
  • Open Access, research data management
    • Read & Publish agreements
    • Implementation workflows
  • HSGcard competence centre
    • Implementation of a new card management software

Reassessing and adjusting the library’s organization chart

Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland

Completion of the transfer of media (published before 1996) from the main library. Wikipedia article in German for more info.

During 2017, apart from our day to day business, we have also been working on the following larger projects:

Circulation / Learning Centre

  • "Kooperative Speicherbibliothek Schweiz": Storage of media (published before 1995). Media from the depot will be moved from September 2017, media from the main library from December 2017.
  • New study places on the upper floor of the library: New Inventory with ergonomic furniture and optimisation of the existing study places by adding blinds and additional illumination.

Information resources

  • RDA/GND: various adjustments and clean-ups.
  • Virtual textbook collection (Mannheim model)
  • EIKON: Completed primary installation in institutes
  • Research data management and Open Access: Concretisation and cooperation with the vice-president’s board research.

Purchase / Finances

  • Automatic content analysis for e-books to be expanded to more publishers (already realised with Springer)
