University Sports Championships

HSG teams have participated in Swiss university championships in several sports. The best result was achieved by the golfers, who defended their 2010 title. The footballers won silver.

26 May 2011. As in 2009 and 2010, the HSG golfers returned from the University Golf Championships in Lavaux as winners. Among the women students, Nina Grün came second. Among the men, Marco Cioffrese won silver with equal points with a competitor. Thanks to the fact that Sandro Viglino and Nicolo Angerer were in fourth place with equal points, the HSG students secured the title in the team classification.

The HSG Golf Team will represent Switzerland at the European Universities Golf Championships in Slovenia in September.

Volley ball team wins bronze

The HSG Football Team won silver at the University Championships in Fribourg on the small pitch, behind host Fribourg and ahead of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports Magglingen. In the final, the HSG footballers lost to Fribourg 1:3.

At the students’ Swiss University Volley Ball Championships in Berne, the HSG Team achieved a pleasing result. The St.Gallen side entered the finals as group winner. After two narrow defeats, they finally won the bronze medal behind Fribourg and Lausanne.

The HSG Basketball Team returned from the University Championship in Geneva with a good fourth place. In the small final for bronze, they suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Uni Basel with 42:47. Fourth place among eight classified teams is the HSG basketballers best result at Swiss University Championships for years. Gold was won by Uni Lausanne.

Poor results in hockey

Things worked out less well for the floorball and ice hockey players. The HSG Floorball Team had travelled to Magglingen for their University Championships with high ambitions but returned to St.Gallen with ninth place after a tournament that was a disappointment to them. The title was won by Uni Zurich.

The HSG Ice Hockey Team also harboured high ambitions when they travelled to their University Championships in Grindelwald. These ambitions were not fulfilled either. After both narrow and clear defeats, the HSG Gekkos came ninth and last. The new University Champions are HTS Chur, which were taking part for the first time.
