SBB Lab for Transport Management

At the initiative of their CEO, Andreas Meyer, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the University of St.Gallen (HSG) will jointly set up a leading research center in the field of the management of transport services.

4 September 2009. At the initiative of their CEO, Andreas Meyer, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the University of St.Gallen (HSG) will jointly set up a leading research center in the field of the management of transport services. The SBB Lab for Transport Management will start up at the Institute for Public Services and Tourism (IDT-HSG) on 1 January 2010.

Issues of transport management
The SBB Lab to be based at the HSG will be run by Prof. Dr. Thomas Bieger, Director at the Institute for Public Services and Tourism (IDT-HSG). To begin with, it will consist of a research staff of three and will investigate issues of transport management, particularly the challenges of management between the government and the market.

The SBB Lab will start operations on 1 January 2010. For the time being, funding has been secured for five years.

Coordination of a research fund
In addition, the SBB Lab will coordinate a research fund out of which work in a network of Swiss researchers in the field of transport will be financed. The fund’s Advisory Board includes Prof. Dr. Rico Maggi, Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), Prof. Dr. Matthias Finger, Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Weidmann, Federal Institute of Techology Zurich (ETHZ), who are leading researchers in this field.
