One of best Faculties of Economics

8 March 2010. The Handelsblatt newspaper has examined and ranked economic research at universities in the German-speaking area. The University of St.Gallen (HSG) is in eighth place among all the universities of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The top position is occupied by the University of Zurich, which is followed by the Universities of Mannheim and Bonn.

Ranking slightly modified
Four years after the introduction of the ranking, Handelsblatt has conducted it in a slighly modified form for the first time. The number of specialist journals that are considered has been extended. Their weighting and the score awarded for articles published by more than one author have been carefully revised. Also, the ranking was for the first time conducted in cooperation with the Thurgau Institute of Economics at the University of Constance and the Institute for Business Cycle Research at the Swiss Federal Institute of Techology (ETH) in Zurich.

Top HSG researchers
Last week, Handelsblatt already published the ranking of the top researchers among the economists in the German-speaking area. Several HSG researchers came out very well indeed. In the “Top 250 Lifework”, Prof. Dr. Gebhard Kirchgässner with his specialist fields of economic policy and econometrics is in 25th place.

The 34th place is occupied by Prof. Dr. Michael Lechner (econometrics, health economics and labor-market economics). Prof. Dr. Christian Keuschnigg and Prof. Paul Söderlind, Ph.D. (both financial economics) are also among the top 100. All in all, ten researchers of the University of St.Gallen are placed among the top 250 economists.

Top 100 under 40
Three HSG researchers have made it into the “Top 200 Current Research Achievements”: Michael Lechner (27th), Prof. Dr. Uwe Sunde (28th) and Prof. Dr. Francesco Audrino (56th). Uwe Sunde and Francesco Audrino are also among the “Top 100 under 40”, where they occupy the 19th and 25th places, respectively. With Prof. Dr. Enrico De Giorgi (79th), the HSG has another strong researcher among the best of the up-and-coming generation.
