15 September 2010. A series of lectures of the University of St.Gallen’s public programme will be dealing with Frisch’s legacy from Wednesday, 22 September.
A cross-section through Frisch’s work
Indefatigably, the Swiss writer sounded out the conditions under which modern people look for their identities, struggle for love relationships and suffer from their failure. Illness and death are recurring themes. Frisch’s protagonists ask quintessential questions; they suppress life’s difficulties or accept them happily, thus coming across new questions.
The lecture series with Prof. Dr. Ulrike Landfester, Professor of German Language and Literature at the University of St.Gallen, will provide a cross-sectional introduction to this work, including Frisch’s first novel, Antwort aus der Stille (An answer out of tranquillity), which he withheld for many years, and the draft of his third diary, which was published posthumously.
Ruth Schweikert in November
However, the HSG’s public lectures are not limited to topics from German-language literature. Anyone who is interested may attend lectures by renowned speakers on “The Seven Deadly Sins”, “Identità Italiana”, Flaubert, Dostoevsky or the “Novelas musicales” from the Spanish-speaking area. In addition, the writer Ruth Schweikert will be a guest of the public programme of the University of St.Gallen.
