1 August 2019. Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkötter, born 05 June 1981, is a German citizen.
Stefan Morkötter studied for his business degree from 2001 to 2005 at the University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management in Essen, Germany and at the same time completed a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at the Hogeschool Zeeland in the Netherlands. After his bachelor studies, he started a Masters degree course in "Banking and Finance" at the University of St.Gallen, completing it in 2007. He then finished his doctorate in Management (Finance Track) at the University of St.Gallen in 2009. The title of his doctoral thesis was "Information Asymmetries on Secondary Credit Markets". His academic education also included study visits to the US (Dartmouth College) and the UK (Keble College, Oxford). During his Ph.D. Studies, he was a research assistant at the Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance at the University of St.Gallen.
During the last ten years, Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkötter has successfully implemented various research and industry projects in Asia. For example, he has been intensively involved with family office structures in the Asian region. Between 2008 and 2012 he made regular appearances as "Visiting faculty in Financial Analysis and Financial Accounting" at the Shanxi University of Finance and Economics, Institute of International Studies in Taiyuan, China, as well as "Visiting Assistant Professor in Finance" at the Singapore Management University, Lee Kong Chian School of Business in Singapore in 2011. Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkötter has already been an Assistant Professor in Finance at the University of St.Gallen since 2009, and since 2013 also a Managing Director of the St.Gallen Institute of Management in Asia (SGI-HSG) in Singapore as well as Academic Director of the HSG "Asia Term", which enjoys great popularity among the St.Gallen students. The SGI-HSG is the local institute of the University of St.Gallen in Singapore and, thanks to Stefan Morkötter's leadership, has in recent years successfully developed into a university-wide platform. In 2018, more than 320 students visited the various programmes in Singapore.
Research in the area of banking, credit risk and private equity
Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkötter's research focus has been on banking, credit risk, financial intermediation, private equity and family offices. He has published in renowned national and international journals. As part of his research activity, he is currently concentrating on network structures within the private equity industry and is researching its influence on the performance of private equity funds. Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkötter is well connected in the international academic community. In 2011, he was a "Visiting Research Fellow" at the University of Oxford, Saïd Business School in Oxford. In 2012, he took on the role of a substitute chairholder for the "Strategic Management" professorship at the University of Ulm, Germany. He has a wide academic network, such as his research collaboration with Tim Jenkinson from the Saïd Business School. Since 2018, he has also been a Research Fellow at the Private Equity Research Consortium (PERC).
Teaching experience at all levels
Prof. Dr. Stefan Morkötter is seen by the students as a committed university lecturer. He was commended by the students at the University of St.Gallen for his exceptional teaching. As assistant professor at the University of St.Gallen, and through his guest visits to other international universities, he brings with him sound teaching experience. His teaching portfolio extends from basic courses to specialist courses such as "Private Equity" and "Investment Banking". He teaches and supports students at all levels of study, also including MBA and Executive MBA in the field of "Banking and Finance". In recent years, he has also developed additional courses, such as the "Business Study Mission to Asia" for MBA students.
