Prof. Dr. Anna-Lena Horlemann studied Mathematics and Philosophy at the Ruhr University Bochum from 2002 to 2007. She received her PhD in Mathematics from the University of Zurich in 2013 with a dissertation entitled Constructions, Decoding and Automorphisms of Subspace Codes. Following her doctorate, she held research positions at Monash University, the University of Melbourne (both in Australia), and the University of Zurich. From September 2015 to February 2017, she was a Senior Researcher and Lecturer at EPFL in Lausanne. She joined the University of St.Gallen in March 2017 as Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Information Technology and has been Associate Professor of Foundations of Computation since February 2021.
Prof. Dr. Anna-Lena Horlemann's research lies at the intersection of theoretical computer science and applied mathematics. Her main research interests include coding theory, quantum error correction, post-quantum cryptography, and computational complexity.
A significant part of her work focuses on the design and analysis of efficient algorithms for challenging mathematical and information-theoretic problems. This includes the development and analysis of encoding and decoding algorithms for a variety of communication models, algorithms for quantum error correction, and methods in code-based cryptography. She also investigates the fundamental limits of efficient computation, including the analysis of deterministic and probabilistic algorithms as well as proofs of NP-hardness and NP-completeness.
The mathematical methods and algorithms developed in her research find applications in modern digital communication, information security, and emerging quantum technologies.
Prof. Dr Anna-Lena Horlemann has extensive teaching experience spanning just under 20 years. Her courses cover a broad range of topics ranging from advanced mathematics to applied lectures on cybersecurity, information theory, and quantum computing.
