Appointment: Martin Ralf Oswald

Prof. Dr. Martin Ralf Oswald completed a Bachelor's and Master's degree in computer science at Dresden University of Technology between 2001 and 2007, followed by a Master's degree in Civil Engineering at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Valparaíso, Chile. From 2009 to 2014, Prof. Oswald completed his PhD in computer science at the University of Bonn and the Technical University of Munich. In his doctoral thesis, he investigated two special cases of 3D reconstruction: reconstruction from a single input image and spatio-temporal reconstruction using image sequences from multiple cameras. Following his doctorate, he conducted research from 2014 to 2024 as a postdoctoral researcher and senior assistant at ETH Zurich. Since 2021, Prof. Oswald has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam.

Research at the intersection of 3D computer vision, AI and machine learning

Prof. Oswald’s research focuses on the intersection of 3D computer vision, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. While artificial intelligence has made enormous progress in text and image understanding in recent years, current methods still lack a robust grasp of 3D spatial structure and the ability to learn temporal and physical dependencies. His goal is to develop versatile, adaptive, and reliable methods for the visual understanding of dynamic 3D scenes that can serve as a foundation for future AI systems, robots, and autonomous vehicles. Prof. Oswald’s work has been recognised with several international awards.
