Appointment: Ivo Blohm

Professor Ivo Blohm has been an Associate Professor of Information Management with special focus on Business Analytics at the University of St.Gallen since 1 February 2022.

1 February 2022. He completed his studies in technology and management-oriented business administration (minor in electrical engineering) at the Technical University of Munich in 2009. He then gained his doctorate at the Chair of Information Management (under Prof. Helmut Krcmar) at the Technical University of Munich in 2013. The title of his doctoral thesis was "Absorptive Capacity and Collective Idea Evaluation in Open Innovation Communities of Software Companies". In it, he investigated how companies process large quantities of unstructured data from virtual innovation communities and how effective filter mechanisms can be designed to support this process. As part of his dissertation, he spent time abroad at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University. Since 2013, he has been a project manager at the Competence Center Crowdsourcing at the University of St.Gallen.

In 2016, he was appointed Assistant Professor for Data Science and Management at the University of St.Gallen. Since 2019, Prof. Ivo Blohm has been Academic Director of the "CAS Big Data & Artificial Intelligence for Managers". His post-doctoral thesis dealt with "Leveraging Business Analytics in Organisations with Crowdsourced Data".

Research: Business analytics in companies

Prof. Ivo Blohm's research focuses on the use and implementation of business analytics in companies to support business decision-making, collaboration and innovation processes. In particular, he investigates how companies can systematically collect, use and commercialise unstructured, automatically tracked and user-generated data that accumulates during the operation of digital platforms on the internet. Prof. Ivo Blohm's research is characterised by a broad range of methods. This includes not only qualitative (e.g. case studies) and design-oriented approaches (e.g. design science), but also quantitative methods in particular. These range from classic multivariate analysis and simulation methods to text mining and machine learning.

Prof. Ivo Blohm has published excellent articles in both interdisciplinary and subject-specific academic journals. Particularly noteworthy are his articles in Information Systems Research, the Journal of Management Information Systems and Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice, which are among the leading journals in their disciplines. His research findings have also been published in the Harvard Business Review. In the December 2020 ranking of WirtschaftsWoche magazine, he was ranked 28th for his research productivity over the past five years. In 2020, he received the Latsis Prize from the University of St.Gallen.

Long-standing and extensive teaching experience

Prof. Ivo Blohm has extensive and long-standing teaching experience in the field of Business Analytics and Data Science at Bachelor and Master level. He takes a case study-based teaching approach. Prof. Ivo Blohm aims to enable students to translate business management problems into data-based questions, to answer these using business analytics, data science and machine learning methods, and then to critically question the resulting findings. In addition, Prof. Ivo Blohm supports doctoral training and executive education at the University of St.Gallen in various formats.
