Prof. Emilia Garcia-Appendini completed her bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics with summa cum laude at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in Mexico City in 1999. After gaining practical experience in the statistics division of marketing firm AC Nielsen and in the financial risk management division of the petroleum firm Pemex, she moved to Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona for her graduate studies, where she obtained a Master’s and a PhD in Economics and Finance (cum laude) in 2007. After her PhD she has held several academic positions, first as Assistant Professor of Finance at Bocconi University in Milan (2006-2012) and at the University of St. Gallen (2012-2017), and subsequently as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Zurich (2017-2024). During this time, she has been a visiting researcher in the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Bank for International Settlements. Since 2023, she is a Senior Research Economist at Norges Bank, the central bank of Norway.
Prof. Emilia Garcia-Appendini's research lies at the intersection of banking and corporate finance, analyzing for example the role of supply chain financing (“trade credit”) in the economy, the role of culture in firms’ and banks’ financial decisions, the transmission of monetary policy, and more recently the role of banks and the financial sector in propagating or mitigating climate risks. She regularly presents her work in international academic and policy-relevant conferences. Her widely cited research has been published, among other journals, in the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Finance, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and the Journal of Financial Intermediation. She acts as a referee for numerous academic and policy journals, conferences, and research foundations. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Banking, Economics and Finance Association (IBEFA) and an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Central Banking.
Prof. Emilia Garcia-Appendini has ample experience teaching in Economics and Finance at all academic levels (bachelor’s, master’s and PhD). She teaches a variety of courses, ranging from very quantitative ones such as Econometrics or Quantitative Methods, to others that combine economic modeling with real-world applications, such as Banking, Financial Intermediation, or Entrepreneurial Finance.
