Agricultural policy at the HSG

What should agricultural policy look like in the future? The public lecture series "Forum Neue Agrarpolitik" at the University of St.Gallen (HSG), which will start on 19 April 2010, will be investigating this question.

12 April 2010. Agricultural policy provokes vehement and controversial discussions in Switzerland. What agricultural policy should look like in the future will be discussed by Hansjörg Walter, National Councillor and President of the Swiss Farmers’ Federation (SBV), and Maria Lezzi, Director of the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE).

Calling for a reconception
Agricultural policy is a never-ending debating point – it always has been and is now more topical than ever. Various quarters are calling for a radical reconception of agricultural policy, although their demands are highly contradictory. What, then, will this “new agricultural policy” look like?

Values and social policy
Above and beyond issues of agricultural economics, this lecture series will deal with general political issues, particularly foreign trade issues, but also with regional and environmental policies, with consumer issues, and ultimately with fundamental values of constitutional and social policy such as identity, autonomy, solidarity and the question as to the extent to which the neoliberal globalisation agenda can actually be implemented. However, the national perspective will by no means preclude a view beyond our borders.

Start on Monday, 19 April
The lecture series, which is chaired by Prof. Dr. Martin Boesch, will start on Monday, 19 April 2010, at 8.15 p.m, in the Provisional Teaching Premises of the HSG Sports Hall, in Room 10-101. All the other dates and information can be found on pp. 24 and 25 of the brochure on the Spring Semester 2010 Public Lecture Courses at the HSG.
