Springer Nature: Deal 2026-2029, SAGE: still No Deal 2026

Update June 2026: swissuniversities and Springer Nature were able to sign a new Publish & Read agreement. Negotiations with SAGE are still at an impasse. The No Deal situation with SAGE remains.

Update June 2026 Springer Nature

Starting now, it is again possible to publish Open Access at no additional cost in participating Springer Nature Hybrid journals. The new agreement also includes publishing in participating Springer Nature Gold journals.
You can find more detailed information about this on our pages for Springer and Nature Research.

Read access to content published until 2025

No changes: We have ongoing access to all previously available content from SAGE.

Read access to content published in 2026

  • SAGE: Unfortunately, the publisher has decided to give no access to new content published in 2026, until a new contract is in place. If you require access to content from SAGE journals that has been newly published in 2026, please consult our page Alternative Sources for Journal Articles.

Open Access Publishing

For articles accepted for publication in participating Springer Nature or SAGE journals after January 1, 2026, the costs of Open Access publication cannot be covered during the contract-free period. Whether affected articles can be published retrospectively in Open Access is now part of the ongoing negotiations.

Researchers can continue to publish in hybrid journals, but they are encouraged not to pay any Article Processing Charges (APC). APCs are a source of income for the publishers. This weakens our negotiating position.

We recommend that researchers exercise their rights and deposit the accepted manuscript version in Alexandria (Green Open Access). Depending on the journal's policy, an embargo period may apply. The HSG Library can help you with this: openaccessunisg.ch.

If there should be any changes to the current situation, we will update this page.
