Producing Science Videos

Create professional-looking video on a shoestring budget to publicize research, advertise conferences, and document events.

Format
This hands-on workshop takes place online in one full-day session from 9:00 to 17:00. During the day, you will develop a storyline, plan and shoot your own material, and work on editing and post-production, with the aim of creating a short science video you can actually use.

Participants who would like to continue refining their clips are also invited to an optional online debriefing session approximately one week later. This voluntary follow-up offers an opportunity to screen finished clips, receive feedback on post-production, and discuss remaining questions with the trainer.

 

Content
You will learn the foundations of visual narration, a working overview of the relevant legal frameworks, and practical techniques to plan, shoot, and edit a short science video with nothing more than your phone. We also work with current AI-assisted tools across the pipeline, from finding a storyline to editing, with a clear eye for what actually improves a clip and what only adds noise.


Learning goals

  • Build a compelling storyline and choose a visual narrative for a research topic of your choice.
  • Conceive, write, plan, shoot, and edit a short clip (max. 90 s) with your phone.
  • Understand the basics of visual storytelling, video production, and editing.
  • Use AI-assisted tools sensibly, and get an overview of legal frameworks and free resources.

 

Prerequisites
None. The workshop is designed for beginners and assumes no technical background; the same techniques also sharpen conference posters and presentations. Bring a fully charged phone with a charging cable, and a laptop or tablet.

 

Trainer
Dr. Felix Seyfarth is an experienced media producer and digital learning designer. He was founding director of the HSG Media Lab and Senior Fellow Digital Learning at the university's Teaching Innovation Lab from 2014 to 2018, and teaches Digital Storytelling for BA and MA students in the Contextual Studies program.

Target audience
PhD students and post-docs who want basic skills in digital video production and visual storytelling, especially for audiovisual media on social channels (max. 8 participants). Academic staff from other universities are welcome; please contact fd@unisg.ch.
