Appointment: Thomas Zellweger Prof. Dr. Thomas Zellweger has been Full Professor of Business Administration with special focus on Family Business at the Center for Family Business (CFB-HSG) since 1 August 2011. Prof. Dr. Thomas Zellweger was born on 25 October 1974 in Münsterlingen. He is a Swiss national, grew up in Weinfelden and gained his general qualification for university entrance at the Kreuzlingen Cantonal School in 1994. He is married with two sons. Marketing head in Brussels After basic military training, he read business administration at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) and obtained the degree of a lic. oec. HSG specialising in SMEs in 2000. After his studies, Zellweger started his professional career as a marketing head for Derivative Consulting in Brussels, a software company with products for the pricing of derivatives for investment banks. In 2002, he took up his doctoral studies at the University of St.Gallen, which he completed in 2006 with a thesis on Risk, Return and Value in the Family Firm with the distinction of summa cum laude; the thesis earned him the Dr. Peter Werhahn Prize for outstanding management research. At the same time, Prof. Dr. Thomas Zellweger was appointed lecturer at the HSG. Research year in Boston In 2007, he spent a research year at Babson College, Boston (USA), in the context of an SNSF research programme. In 2009, he completed his cumulative habilitation thesis consisting of scientific papers written for numerous academic journals, including the Family Business Review, the Small Business Economics Journal, Financial Markets and Portfolio Management and the Zeitschrift für KMU und Entrepreneurship. On 1 November 2009, Thomas Zellweger was appointed Habilitated Lecturer in Business Administration (with focus on Entrepreneurship) and Assistant Professor of Business Administration (with focus on Entrepreneurship), both at the University of St.Gallen. Several awards Before and in connection with the publication of his cumulative habilitation thesis, he received several awards for his research work, such as the Outstanding Reviewer Award at Family Business Review (2009), the Journal of Small Business Management (JSBM) Office Depot Best Paper Award at the USASBE Conference (2008), the Joe Goodman Award of the Family Firm Institute, Boston (2007) and the Honorable Mention at Best Doctoral Dissertation Award by the Family Firm Institute, Boston (2006). He won the Best Unpublished Paper Award of the Family Firm Institute in 2008 and 2011. His papers were published in leading academic journals, such as Organization Science, the Journal of Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice. Founder of the Center for Family Business In 2005, he founded the Center for Family Business at the University of St.Gallen with the support of Prof. Dr. Urs Frey and Dr. Frank Halter; he has been the Center’s Managing Director ever since. For the period from March to July 2010, Prof. Dr. Thomas Zellweger accepted an appointment as Visiting Professor in Family Business Studies at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia. In addition, he has been Permanent Visiting Professor at the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany, since 2010. KMU-HSG project leader From 2002 to 2005, Prof. Dr. Thomas Zellweger worked as a project leader at the KMU-HSG, where his research primarily focused on the funding of small and medium-sized enterprises. After taking up his doctoral studies and founding the Center for Family Business, he increasingly concentrated his research on family businesses. With his appointment as full professor, he will assume responsibility for the subject, "Family Business". Moreover, he will be a Director of the Swiss Research Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (KMU-HSG).
