Military ECTS

Recognition and crediting of qualified military leadership training (cadre training) of the Swiss Armed Forces

The University of St.Gallen (HSG) is one of Switzerland's leading educational institutions in terms of cooperation and coordination between compulsory service (military service, civil defence and civilian service) and studies. This excellent co-operation is particularly evident in the recognition of military leadership experience gained during cadre training in the Swiss Armed Forces.

At Bachelor's and Master's level, it is possible to acquire so-called military credits (MilCrd) for Swiss Armed Forces cadre training programmes.

Formal requirements
Military credits (MilCrd) at bachelor's level are awarded for military service performed as part of cadre training and training services for senior non-commissioned officers, officers (all officer ranks) and staff officers.

At all levels (BA and MA), a maximum of 4 credits can be awarded for training as senior non-commissioned officers, a maximum of 6 credits for training as junior officers and a maximum of 6 credits for company commanders or staff officers. These credits, which have been earned through military service, can only be credited to the skills area. Credits cannot be applied to other areas.

You can have your military service credited if you have passed the assessment year.

What are ECTS credits? "ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is a Europe-wide recognised system for the recognition, transfer and accumulation of study credits. It is geared towards students and is based on the amount of work they have to complete in order to achieve the objectives of a degree programme. These objectives are preferably defined in terms of learning outcomes and skills to be acquired. The student's workload is expressed in credit points or credits". Crediting is based on the decree "II.A.09" Art. 135 ff. of the University of St.Gallen.

"1 ECTS point corresponds to a student workload of 25-30 hours"

Recognition requires a final grade of at least 3 (good) in the final military qualifications (final grade). The final qualifications of the cadre training and training services (earning) must be enclosed as a PDF.

MilCrd HSG crediting can only be applied for after completion of the full military leadership training (cadre training).

The application for crediting after the end of military leadership training must include

  • Fully completed and personally signed credit transfer form
  • Final report of the student based on specified criteria (see credit transfer form)
  • Copy of the final military qualifications (overall assessment: at least 3 in each final qualification): (cadre training and training services (earning)) of the degree for which the military credits are requested
  • Proof of the military grade / promotion received (DB from page 8)
  • Confirmation of the days of service completed (DB from page 12)

The entire credit application must be submitted in a PDF document in the appropriate order to the Military Liaison Office (milvrbunisg.ch).
