HSG Research Insight #7 | New Work: What it takes for genuine participation in the workplace

In the seventh episode of the science podcast HSG Research Insight, host Daniel Sager discusses the challenges and opportunities of participation in companies with Dr Jonas Friedrich from the Research Institute for Work and Working Environments at the University of St. Gallen.

The main focus is on how companies can enable genuine co-determination rather than merely creating the appearance of democracy. We discuss why it is so difficult to break down old power structures and what measures are necessary to ensure authentic participation. In addition, we highlight that a transformation towards a more democratic corporate model does not automatically lead to a reduction in inequalities and how an open corporate culture is crucial to the success of such changes. We also ask ourselves whether efficiency inevitably suffers when employees have more say.
