Sommerlehrstipendium-Summercamp in China 2025

This summer we had the unique opportunity to participate in the PLACE (Playshop for Language and Cultural Exchange) Summer Camp at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou (HKUST, GZ). As part of our Chinese course at the University of St. Gallen, twelve of us were selected to join this two-week program, which turned out to be much more than just a language and culture workshop—it became an unforgettable experience of learning, discovery, and friendship.
From the very first day, we were impressed by the modern campus of HKUST (GZ). The facilities were state-of-the-art, and we quickly realized how much effort was being put into innovation and scientific research there. One of the highlights on campus was the “Lab Fair,” where we were able not only to tour the laboratories but also to take part in hands-on experiments. Making our own candles or extracting DNA from a banana gave us a playful yet insightful understanding of scientific work in a cutting-edge environment.
Sports and leisure activities added another dimension to our stay. The campus offered an incredible variety of opportunities—from team sports to fitness facilities—so everyone could find something enjoyable. These activities were wonderful ways to balance our academic explorations with fun and relaxation.
Beyond the campus, we explored the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through several “Lingnan Culture Field Studies.” Visiting the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall gave us a deeper understanding of historical and cultural traditions, while the GAC Technology Museum allowed us to gain insights into China’s dynamic technological landscape. These excursions broadened our perspectives and enriched our appreciation of the region’s diversity.
What shaped our experience most profoundly, however, was the international exchange. With around 140 international students and over 400 Chinese students participating, the camp became a vibrant hub of dialogue and collaboration. We connected across cultures, shared ideas, and built friendships that we are sure will last far beyond these two weeks.
We are especially grateful to our teacher, Mrs. Fraefel-Huang, for making this opportunity possible. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the organizers of the camp, whose dedication created such a well-structured and inspiring program. Finally, we would like to thank all the other participants, who contributed to the warm atmosphere and made these two weeks truly special.
Looking back, the PLACE Summer Camp at HKUST (GZ) was not only an academic and cultural journey but also an experience of community, discovery, and personal growth—something we will carry with us for a very long time.
