Change and continuity in Chinese women’s search for upward social mobility in Lesotho and China. With Sarah Hanisch, University of Applied Sciences Konstanz
Against the backdrop of China’s national struggle for modernity and globalization, Sarah Hanisch examines Chinese migrant women’s complex struggles for upward social mobility across different generations and localities in China and Lesotho. Based on nine months of fieldwork in Lesotho (2014) and China (2017), Hanisch illustrates how these women interpret and narrate their migratory and everyday experiences through powerful metanarratives on “sweetness” and “bitterness.”
The talk not only examines the history of Chinese migration to Lesotho, but also explores how some of these women look back on their experiences in the year 2026.
