Marvin Hanisch earned his PhD in Strategic Management and Innovation Management from the University of Passau in 2019. He also holds an M.A. in International Economics and Business, an M.Sc. in Business Administration, and an M.A. in International Cultural and Business Studies, all from the University of Passau.

Professional Career

Prior to joining the University of St.Gallen, Marvin Hanisch has been serving as an Associate Professor (tenured since November 2023) and previously as a Tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen’s Innovation Management & Strategy Department since September 2019. As of September 2026, he continues his role as a part-time Associate Professor at the University of Groningen.

From 2014 to 2018, he worked as a Research Associate at the Chair of Organization, Technology Management and Entrepreneurship at the University of Passau, where he has also been an Affiliate Professor since April 2020.

Additionally, he held positions as a Visiting Lecturer in the PhD program at the School of Business, Maynooth University (Ireland, 2022–2026) and as a Visiting Professor at the School of Business and Economics, Free University of Berlin (Germany, 2023–2024).

Teaching Activities

Marvin Hanisch has taught at leading institutions across Europe, including the University of Passau, University of Groningen, Free University of Berlin, and Maynooth University. His teaching spans undergraduate, graduate, and PhD levels, covering topics such as digital transformation, data analytics, strategic management, and crisis management. He has consistently received high teaching evaluations, and his Strategic Management course was ranked among the top 5 courses at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Groningen. In addition to his university teaching, he shares his expertise through his popular YouTube channel, Statistics Made Easy, which provides accessible tutorials on statistics.

Awards

Dr. Marvin Hanisch is an accomplished academic with extensive international experience and is among the top 20 most productive researchers in the field of business and economics in the Netherlands (Economenparade 2025). His work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Jürgen Hauschildt Prize (2025) for the best academic publication in empirically grounded innovation management, the JTS Early Career Researcher Prize (2023), and the Distinguished Paper Award from the Strategic Management Division of the Academy of Management (2023). Additional accolades include the Top Viewed Article award from the Journal of Management Studies (2026), the KSG Best Entrepreneurship Research Award (2019), the SIG Strategic Management Behavioral Strategy Track Best Paper Award at EURAM (2019), and multiple Strategic Management Society awards, such as the Honorable Mention for the Best Conference Paper Prize (2018) and the Cooperative Strategies Best Paper Award (2018). His research has also been nominated for and received runner-up positions in categories like the SMS Corporate Strategy Best PhD Proposal Prize (2025) and the KSG Best Entrepreneurship Research Award (2025).

Marvin Hanisch is a frequent invited speaker at leading research universities, including HKU Business School in Hong Kong, Macquarie University in Australia, the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM), Tilburg University, and Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, as well as TU Munich and the University of Passau in Germany. He is also a regular panelist and presenter at international conferences, such as the Academy of Management Annual Meeting, the Strategic Management Society Annual Conference, and the Strategy Science Conference. Additionally, he regularly delivers talks to companies on topics like digital transformation and interorganizational collaboration.

Marvin Hanisch's research focuses on organizational leadership and governance issues in response to significant disruptions, including discontinuous technological changes, grand challenges, and crises. Employing both quantitative and qualitative methods, Professor Hanisch investigates strategic alliances in the biopharmaceutical sector, cross-industry blockchain networks, artificial intelligence in organizations, digital platforms, and open-source software and social media communities.

Professor Hanisch’s work has been featured in prestigious academic journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science,Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Research, and R&D Management. He also contributes to practice-oriented publications such as California Management Review, LSE Business Review, CXOTech Magazine, and blog posts. Beyond academia, Professor Hanisch collaborates with and provides consultancy to regional firms and multinational corporations, sharing his expertise to drive innovation and strategic development. He is also a fellow of the Jantina Tammes School of Digital Society, Technology, and AI (JTS Scholar Program), an interdisciplinary group of researchers interested in advancing understanding of topics related to digital transformation.
