In Business Development, you take responsibility for expanding existing business areas and exploring new ones within a company. The development and design of innovative business models as part of the digital transformation of companies play a key role. This includes the creation of technology-based products, services, and processes.

Methods of strategic management and technology-driven innovation management form the core of Business Development.

In larger companies, the scope of responsibilities often includes the strategic management of partnerships with start-ups. Furthermore, the development and implementation of collaborative models with other stakeholders within the business ecosystem are becoming increasingly important.

As powerful drivers of technological change, companies must consider the economic, ecological, and social impacts of their activities. In Business Development, you also take on responsibility for these broader consequences.

An important aspect of the digital transformation of companies is the increasing digitalisation of customer interfaces and relationships with other stakeholders. Three key foundations of this shift are:

The rapidly growing number of digital communication channels (e.g., web, social media, and mobile channels), which are increasingly accepted and becoming the preferred customer touchpoints.

The widespread adoption of digital transaction channels such as e-commerce and m-commerce.

The intensive digitalisation of services, products, and customer processes, which build on digital communication and transaction channels.

A comprehensive view of these three changes is made possible through new, interdisciplinary design and management approaches such as Digital Channel & Customer Relationship Management. The goal is to design, develop, support through IT, and manage integrated digital customer experiences across all communication and transaction channels (touchpoints).

This creates an interface role between IT experts, analysts, designers, (digital) marketing specialists, the IT department, and business development. In the context of digital products, this professional field represents a new form of product management.

Digitalisation requires private and public organisations to undergo a continuous transformation process — ranging from the optimisation and design of digital processes and products to complex, organisation-wide changes. This process leads to the integration of traditional management tasks (e.g., strategy, operations, and innovation management) with areas that were previously focused solely on technology (IT management and application design) or the human element (skills and change management).

This results in a multidimensional, integrated, and complex field: "Transforming and Managing Digital Business."

Digital business managers design and lead organisations in a way that creates and realises value for all stakeholders in a sustainable and resilient manner. The focus is not only on isolated business solutions (such as digital products or processes) but also on the interaction of these solutions as part of a company-wide architecture — spanning strategy, organisation, infrastructure, and applications.

Graduates specialising in Transforming and Managing Digital Business are prepared for leadership roles, such as Product Owner, Change Manager, Process Analyst, or Value Stream Manager — with career prospects including Programme Manager or Chief Information Officer (CIO).

In the context of organisational and business process digitalisation, digital business managers hold critical strategic and leadership functions — not only in technology and consulting firms but also in all private and public organisations operating in the digital age.

Entrepreneurial thinking, decision-making, and action in the digital age require an interdisciplinary perspective. Entrepreneurship integrates various management disciplines and technological fields to address socially relevant challenges.

Anyone seeking to bring an innovative business idea to market and drive further growth will constantly face uncertainty, international competition, limited resources, and emerging technologies. Therefore, core elements include advanced competencies in entrepreneurial methods and conceptual knowledge for the development, analysis, and implementation of scalable business models — from start-ups and scale-ups to established companies.

A key focus is on the growth and financing of technology-oriented businesses. Graduates will be prepared to found, lead, and scale a technology-focused start-up or to take on a management role in an innovative company.

This profile also prepares graduates for roles on the investor side, such as in venture capital firms and corporate VCs.

The field of Supply Chain and Operations Management is shaped by the dynamics of value creation networks. A key challenge is to establish a coordinating link between the core functions of procurement and sourcing, manufacturing and production, and sales and distribution.

This role combines a process design and control function — focused on systematic analysis — with an interface function aimed at managing the flow of value.

In addition to analysis and design, the role also involves decision-oriented planning, execution, and control of processes within companies (micro-level) as well as between value creation partners (macro-level). The tasks are integrated at both the conceptual and operational levels.

Finally, the role involves the development and implementation of supply chain and operations strategies as well as business model-driven initiatives aimed at achieving product and service excellence — which often requires an organisational transformation.

Information technology is no longer just a provider of "services" — it has become a core element of many products and a universal foundation for innovation. Technology Solution Architects work in various roles across industries at the intersection of management and IT. Their responsibilities include technical management — for example, as a Business Analyst, Product Owner, Consultant, Project Manager, or as the leader of a technology-oriented start-up.

As both specialists and leaders, they understand the opportunities, challenges, and emerging trends in both management and technology. They are fully responsible for the development of technological innovations — designing, implementing, and testing proofs of concept to solve business problems through an iterative process.

These new, innovative technology products — or improvements to existing solutions — are designed to be user-centric, secure, and scalable.

The role of a Technology Solution Architect involves taking responsible decisions that have a significant impact on business development while also considering the broader social relevance of technological advancements.
