Our Community

Our small cohorts allow you to quickly get to know all the computer science students at the University of St.Gallen and settle into our computer science community. Our professors and teaching assistants are on a first-name basis with the students, and students are welcome to simply drop by with questions, as long as the office door is open. We place great importance on ensuring that students feel comfortable, offering quiet spaces and study areas directly within the University's facilities. This creates an ideal environment for successfully navigating this demanding programme together with friends.

The Mario Kart Tournament

On the first evening of StartWeek all new Assessment Year students gather for a Mario Kart tournament. Randomly assigned teams, entertaining rivalries, and a light-hearted competition provide a fun to get to know your fellow students. Paired with a pizza dinner, the event serves as a perfect icebreaker and helps you start integrating into the community.

Settle in first: The StartWeek is your integration week.

The StartWeek begins a week before classes start. Led by two experienced students (your StartWeek tutors), you will explore various aspects of the University of St.Gallen and, of course, the city itself in a small group of about 25 students. You will also work on a case study, have lunch together in the cafeteria, and get to know each other better during the evening programme. Your tutors will show you their favorite spots and tell you all about the student life.

Celebrating milestones together

Celebrating milestones together

There are several courses where, towards the end of the semester, not only are the semester projects completed, but a small reception is also offered after the final presentation. This allows students to pause, reflect, and realize: We are making progress! With some snacks, you can celebrate with your fellow students the achievement of another milestone together.

SCS Community Events

The School of Computer Science (SCS) organises a variaty of community events for its students. All computer science students are warmly invited to participate. These events offer students from various semesters and study levels (Assessment, Bachelor, Master, Doctorate) the opportunity to get to know each other better. Additionally, it's a great opportunity to meet professors and teaching assistants in a different context. The recurring events are:

  • SCS Get-Together: The Get-Together is an informal gathering on campus. After new students have settled in, this event offers them a chance to meet older students. Therefore, it typically takes place towards the end of October.

  • SCS Student Conference: At the conference, computer science bachelor's students (5th semester) and master's students (3rd semester) present their projects. The conference is moderated and features guest speakers, presentations and offers food and drinks. (First event: December 2024, replacing the Christmas Apéro).

  • SCS Snow-Day: After the winter exams, the SCS heads for the snow to spend a whole day skiing, snowboarding and snow hiking. While participants spend most of their time in small groups, they gather for a communal lunch in a hut and then again for mulled wine at the valley station.

  • SCS Hike: St. Gallen is close to beautiful hiking trails. In the summer, the SCS invites everyone to join a group hike. Typically, participants organise their own travel to the hiking area, but the hike itself is done together, rounded off with a piece of delicioius cake.

HCI: Research at the Institute of Computer Science

We are using navigation devices more intuitively and relying on them to guide us optimally from point A to point B. The team led by Johannes Schöning (Professor of Human-Computer Interaction) is investigating the negative effects of our usage of navigation devices and how the latter could be better designed for specific situations.

StartWeek, 2023

The Start Week is an introduction to life at our university. In small groups, students get to know each other, work on a case study on a relevant topic (2023: "Polarization"), are introduced to our technical infrastructure, and compete for the Grand Prize for the best Start Week project. In 2023, this prize was won by a group from the Bachelor's program in Computer Science.

Our School of Computer Science introduces itself

The University of St. Gallen (HSG) established the School of Computer Science (SCS-HSG) in August 2020. Starting in the fall semester of 2021, it will train the first HSG students in the Master's program in Computer Science. "The St. Gallen program in Computer Science aims to be a genuine computer science education that is integratively connected with specific knowledge in economics, law, and cultural sciences, as well as with the culture of HSG," said HSG Rector Ehrenzeller. Eastern Switzerland will thus become an important location for IT professionals who also possess a business-oriented education.

Impact Award: Research on Artificial Intelligence

Damian Borth (Professor of AI and ML) and Konstantin Schürholt (PhD student) focused their project on how we can make neural networks safer, more trustworthy, and more sustainable. By analyzing populations of neural networks, the researchers aim to discover whether there are common patterns or structures. This could lead to the development of approaches and methods for training neural networks more efficiently. This is significant in relation to sustainability, as well as the safety and trustworthiness of artificial intelligence instances.
