HSG Research Insight #9 | How can research succeed under authoritarian conditions?

This podcast episode addresses the question of how social research can succeed even in autocratically governed societies.

The latest episode of the science podcast HSG Research Insight focuses, among other things, on the topic of freedom of research in Russia, particularly in the context of the ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. In light of survey results from a Russian opinion research institute, according to which 70 percent of the Russian population supports the war, the essential question arises as to the validity of such data in a society characterized by fear and repression.

Host Daniel Sager's guest is Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schmid from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at HSG. This year, he is launching a new research project that examines the Russian state's propaganda strategy and the population's reaction to it. He explains the challenges that even independent Western researchers face when they want to conduct valid research in Russia.
