HSG Research Insight #8 | What threats does the demographic time bomb pose?

This podcast episode examines the demographic crisis looming in many developed countries and its potential impact on the economy and society.
HSG Research Insight #8 | Was droht uns durch die demographische Zeitbombe?

South Korea is facing a demographic crisis characterised by an alarmingly low birth rate of only 0.75 children per woman. This threatening situation could lead to the country's population shrinking by a third over the next three decades, which could result in ghost towns, an ageing society and the collapse of the economy and social security systems. Switzerland, although in a slightly better position with a birth rate of 1.3 children per woman, is also affected by a similar trend, as are many other European countries around us. In this episode, the far-reaching consequences of these demographic changes for the economy and society are discussed, as well as the necessary measures in migration, labour market, fertility, transport and family policy. Host Daniel Sager's guests are Dr Anna Brzykcy from the Competence Centre for Diversity, Disability and Inclusion at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and Prof. Dr Patrick Emmenegger from the School of Economics and Political Science at HSG.
