After a year under Donald Trump 2.0, relations between Switzerland and the US appear tense, cool and uncertain. On Switzerland's national holiday, of all days, the message reached Switzerland that the customs negotiations had failed and that the country would continue to face poor trading conditions compared to, for example, the EU member states. Nor was the agreement reached in November celebrated everywhere as a success. There was talk of gold bar diplomacy or oligarch diplomacy when a group of Swiss business leaders discussed the American customs regime with President Donald J. Trump. What is the real state of Swiss economic relations with the USA under Trump 2.0? How good or poor is the customs deal? Hardly anyone can assess the situation better than Dr Rahul Sahgal.
The CEO of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce is a triple HSG alumnus: after obtaining qualifications in business administration and law, he wrote a doctoral thesis on ‘Foreign Direct Investment Decision-making Processes: The Case of Swiss Companies in India’. After several years of experience in the private sector, including as CEO in India, he moved to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and worked at the Swiss Embassy in Washington, D.C. from 2017 to 2021. Prior to his current position, he most recently served as deputy head of the Tax Division at the State Secretariat for International Financial Matters (SIF) in Bern.
