"It pays to be brave." This phrase has accompanied Joy Rauchenstein throughout her career to date. She has certainly demonstrated courage, as she recently launched her own start-up, Lextec. The platform combines artificial intelligence with legal work and reflects Joy's drive to bring together entrepreneurship and human rights.
Her background is impressive. After completing a bachelor's degree at HSG and master's degrees in London and St. Gallen, Joy is now using her legal knowledge to break new ground in the legal world. For her, law is a medium of justice, but many existing structures stand in the way of this aspiration. With Lextec, she wants to address this issue and show how responsibly used technology can have a real impact.
As is often the case with start-ups, not everything went smoothly for her. Shortly before the launch, her LinkedIn profile was blocked, which threw her plans into disarray overnight. Looking back, however, Joy sees this moment as a gain: "Luckily, it happened that way, because the first plan probably wouldn't have turned out so good."
In our conversation, she explains how the phrase "law affects everyone" became "human rights affect everyone" for her and what role her time at Solidarity House in St. Gallen played in this. She also talks about the parallel challenge of building a start-up while serving on the board of Amnesty International.
Her perspective shows the impact technology can have on access to justice and why now is the right time to open up and modernise the legal world.
