Competitive sport and a degree course: Alina Frei balances these two commitments in her everyday life, giving us an insight into her highly structured routine. Discipline is key: “For me, discipline means sticking with it even when it's hard.”

Alina is the Swiss 100-metre hurdles champion and has competed in the 2022 World Championships in Argentina and the 2025 European Championships in Bergen. Currently ranked 258th in the world, she is one of the best hurdlers in Switzerland. Alongside her sporting career, she is studying Business Administration at HSG – a combination that requires organisation, perseverance and passion.

In this interview, Alina discusses how she balances intensive training schedules with lectures and exams, and the important roles that discipline, clear goals, and structure play in her daily life. She also discusses the support she receives from her family, friends, and coaches, as well as the mental strategies that help her stay motivated. Her story illustrates the challenges and rewards of balancing sport and academic studies, and what it takes to achieve top performance in both areas.
