Accessibility

The University of St.Gallen strives to continuously expand structural and digital accessibility. We are constantly seeking to improve accessibility and therefore welcome your feedback.

Accessible toilets are available in various buildings around campus. Toilets are locked and a Euro-Key is required to open them. If you do not have a key, please contact the Caretaking Services (071 224 22 48).

Accessible parking facilities are available on campus.

The parking facilities were laid out to conform to standards that should enable people to get in and out of their vehicles with ease. Drivers who make use of these parking facilities have to display a valid DI parking permit in their vehicle.

If you require a disabled parking facility but do not have a DI parking permit, please contact the Parking Facility Administration of the University of St.Gallen — or Diversity, Equality & Inclusion. We will be glad to look for a solution for you. Please note, however, that you will normally have to submit a medical certificate in order to be authorised to make use of special arrangements.

Access to the Main Building
Three reserved and marked disabled parking facilities can be found on the main forecourt (at the Varnbüelstrasse end). They are exclusively available to guests, students and staff of the University.

Access to Dufourstrasse 48 (Administration)
The Administration building is accessible through the underground car park (with a disabled parking facility near the lift); opening the door, though, requires physical effort.

Access to Rosenbergstrasse 30
The accessible car park at Rosenbergstrasse 30 is located behind the building.

Access to St. Jakobstrasse 21
The barrier-free access to this property is via the main entrance, directly to the lift (by means of a ramp).

Access to the Sports Facilities
A disabled parking facility is situated in front of the Sports hall.

Here you can find out which buildings and entrances are freely accessible in the city of St. Gallen:

Wheelmap is the map for wheelchair-accessible places;

Mobil mit Behinderung gives relevant information (in German) about getting around in the city of St. Gallen.

Despite the well-developed public transport system here, many people with a disability have to rely on disability transport services. There are three disability transport service providers in the city of St. Gallen (details in German only):

All these transport services are affiliated to the Federation of Disability Transport Services of the City of St.Gallen.

Many regular taxis offer their services in St. Gallen. However, not all the taxis are capable of accommodating a wheelchair; we recommend that this question should be settled in advance.

The following taxi companies, for example, provide special services for people with a disability:

Taxi Frosch : tel. 071 500 50 50

Herold Taxi : tel. 071 222 27 77

Arrival by public transport:

Passengers with limited mobility can order assistance with boarding and alighting, at stations with support facilities, from the SBB Call Center Handicap. The offer is valid for express trains and some regional trains.

From the main railway station, the University is served by bus lines 5 and 9. Please note the current timetables.

  • Bus no. 5, in the direction of Rotmonten: most relevant bus stop Universität/Dufourstrasse, travel time 5 minutes.
  • Bus no. 9, in the direction of Schuppis Nord: most relevant bus stop Universität/Gatterstrasse, travel time 9 minutes. Please note that the no. 9 stops close to the Main Building.

For obstacle-free access to most buildings, the no. 9 bus is the preferable choice. If you opt for the no. 5 bus, you will have to cope with a relatively steep path or steep (tarmacked) road to reach the University campus. The University buildings Dufourstrasse 48 (Administration), the Main and auxiliary Building, as well as the Library and the Mensa, can be reached through the car park (which is roughly half-way up the steep road). The Central Institute Building (Building 24) can be reached by continuing up the road to its end.

Arrival by air

If you travel to the University of St.Gallen by air, we recommend that you obtain information about the accessibility of the airport concerned.

If you land at Zurich Airport, you can catch a direct train to St. Gallen and then take bus no. 5 or 9 from the main railway station.

If you land at Altenrhein Airport, you will find the stop for the bus to Rorschach or Rheineck at the airport; from either of those places, you can catch a train to the main station in St. Gallen. The train journey to St. Gallen takes 20 or 30 minutes, depending on whether you depart from Rorschach or Rheineck, and on arrival you can take bus no. 5 or 9 from the main station.

Hearing loops (induction loop systems) are a wireless technology that enables people wearing a hearing aid to receive audio signals such as music or human utterances via their hearing aid without interference. As soon as a lecturer uses the available microphone, the signals are transmitted accordingly. No additional technical measures are required.

The following rooms are equipped with hearing loops:

If you need a short break from hectic student life, you are welcome to use the University’s Quiet Room and/or first-aid rooms. The Quiet Room is located in the Main Building; however, access is only possible via a high step. Alternatively, you may use either of the two first-aid rooms (Main Building, 01-108; Library building, 09-015). The first-aid rooms are more spacious and are equipped with height-adjustable first-aid beds.
