What is implicit bias?
Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decision in an unconscious manner. This is not only an individual phenomenon, but also plays into group processes, for example in meetings of appointment committees.
Bias training
We consider bias training an important tool for increasing the proportion of women in organisations. Biases can occur at all stages of appointment, recruitment, promotion, or project assignment, and may not be easy to recognise. Besides women, biases can affect further minority groups, such as different age or racialised groups.
Bias tool
Our Bias Tool leads players through fictional yet realistic scenarios that cover all stages of an academic appointment process. Not only will they observe the meetings of a fictional appointment committee, but also have the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process. In the end, the tool shows whether the player succeeded in appointing a woman professor—or not.
