Master in Law (MLaw)

The MLaw program is a demanding, generalist legal education focused on preparing students for legal practice, with a primary emphasis on Swiss law.

Objectives of the Master’s Program

The Master’s program in Law (MLaw) equips you with the tools to effectively navigate legal issues and provides the ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new legal fields and questions. In light of the increasingly short "half-life" of knowledge, legal education can no longer focus solely on imparting detailed, specialized knowledge. The MLaw program therefore places great importance on training in legal reasoning in the context of the Process of Law and the development of practical legal skills. This includes learning interdisciplinary work and reflecting on the function and impact of law. Additionally, a strong emphasis is placed on procedural law and practical orientation.

The MLaw program develops you into an independent and critically thinking legal professional. This challenging goal is supported by a range of legal education offerings, particularly in the context of the broader curriculum. These include courses in evidence law, forensic psychiatry, criminology, legal sociology, gender law, and participation in moot courts.

The strategic focus on economic relevance, the Process of Law, and interdisciplinarity creates a distinct profile for the MLaw program, setting it apart from law programs at other universities. Our comprehensive didactic approach is characterized by a clear structure and the use of various teaching methods tailored to specific educational objectives. Building on a solid legal foundation, the MLaw allows students to specialize in the Master’s stage according to their own preferences and interests. With a strong student-to-faculty ratio and small group work, our program enables an efficient and effective study experience. The Master’s degree, which can be completed in three semesters, qualifies you for legal internships and, ultimately, the bar exam in all Swiss cantons.
