Major Economics

General

With a Bachelor's degree in Economics, you are ideally prepared for many Master's programmes. At the University of St.Gallen, you can continue your studies seamlessly with the Master in Economics (MEcon) after completing your Bachelor's in Economics. The MEcon offers you a comprehensive economic education based on the core areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. The MEcon provides you with the necessary tools to analyse economic policy problems using state-of-the-art methods and to develop solution strategies.

The Master in Quantitiative Economics and Finance (MiQE/F) is also open to you with a Bachelor's major in Economics. The MiQE/F offers a high-quality education in econometrics and quantitative methods as well as in economics and finance. The programme enables you to analyse and solve challenging problems in economic policy, finance and business by combining quantitative methods with the theoretical foundations of economics and finance.

All MiQE/F applicants, including HSG graduates, are subject to a selection procedure. Further information on the selection procedure and the admission requirements for the MiQE/F can be found here. The application deadline for the MiQE/F is 30 April.

For the Master's programmes in Business Administration at the HSG, the Master's preparatory level is required, but this can already be completed during the Major Economics. It is also possible to apply for the specialised Master's programmes Master in Strategy and International Management (SIM), the Master in Banking and Finance (MBF) or the Master in International Affairs (MIA). A special application and selection procedure applies for these programmes.

If you have any questions about admission, please contact the Admissions Office of the University of St.Gallen.

As a general rule, you will start the Major Economics in the Autumn semester. There are certain exceptions where it is possible to start in the Spring semester, e.g. if you are transferring from another University for a second Bachelor's degree.

Study Design

No, this is not possible. Only one voluntary specialisation is shown in the final transcript of the Bachelor's diploma.

Depending on the course, the courses in the Major Economics are completed with a centralised or decentralised examination. In addition, there are courses in which partial examinations must be completed during the semester. The respective forms of examination are documented in the course information sheet and are binding from the start of the semester. The centralised examinations take place outside the lecture period.
