Interview with Vedran Lakic

MBF Student, 2022 Intake

What key factors influenced your decision to join the MBF programme at the University of St. Gallen?

I was looking for a Master’s programme that combined strong academics, practical relevance, and excellent career opportunities. The MBF stood out because of its international reputation and the flexibility to tailor my studies to my interests. But beyond the academics, the community played a huge role in my decision. The MBF attracts ambitious, talented students from diverse backgrounds, creating a dynamic learning environment that constantly challenges and inspires me.

What has been the most valuable experience or learning so far in the MBF programme?

Beyond the technical finance knowledge, the biggest takeaway for me has been learning how to think critically and apply financial theory to real-world problems. The programme is challenging, but that’s what makes it so rewarding. Another key highlight is the network—whether it’s collaborating with highly driven peers or connecting with alumni, these relationships add immense value both academically and professionally.

How is the MBF helping you prepare for your future career in finance or related fields?

The MBF is more than just finance—it teaches structured problem-solving and analytical thinking, which are essential in the industry. The programme’s strong reputation also opens doors to top employers in banking, asset management, and consulting. It’s almost like a stamp of quality that signals to employers that you’ve been trained in a highly demanding environment. On top of that, the access to industry professionals and networking events gives me the opportunity to explore different career paths and make meaningful connections.

What do you enjoy most about the community and networking opportunities at HSG?

The people. The MBF brings together ambitious yet collaborative students who push each other to grow. Some of my most valuable learning experiences have come from conversations with classmates—whether during case competitions, group projects, or casual coffee chats. The alumni network is also a huge asset. Many former MBF students now work in top positions across Europe, and they are always willing to share insights and advice, making career planning much more accessible.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the MBF programme?

Be proactive and take advantage of everything the MBF has to offer! The flexibility allows you to shape your own experience, whether through electives, exchange programmes, or networking events. It’s a demanding programme, but if you embrace the challenge, it will push you to grow both academically and personally. And most importantly—build relationships. The people you meet here won’t just be classmates; they’ll be your future colleagues, mentors, and friends.
